Campylobacter

  • Undercooked poultry, unpasteurized milk;
  • carried by -puppies & kittens.
  • Prodrome w/ abd pain, “pseudoappendicitis”;
  • c/b GBS, reactive arthritis.

Infection that involves the jejunum, ileum, and often the colon and rectum. Transmission commonly due to ingestion of undercooked or raw meat, especially poultry. Incubation period averages 3 days. Higher risk for reactive arthritis if HLAB27+. Also a well-established and classic trigger for Guillain-Barré syndrome. Treatment: Self-limited, provide support/rehydration; if severe, consider azithromycin.
