Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP)
gut bacterial translocation to ascites. In cirrhosis, ↓ ascites opsonins (esp. if ↓AFTP) ↑ risk of infxn. Infection usually monomicrobial: most common → E. coli, Klebs, S. pneumo; rarely Staph & Pseudo. Rx 3rd-gen ceph; carbapenem if critically ill.
