  • ↑ acid exposure in esophagus, caused by ↑ transient LES relaxations.
    • Worsened by ↑ intraabd pressure (eg, obesity, pregnancy)
    • ↓ esophagogastric motility
    • hiatal hernia
  • Rarely caused by ↑ secretory states (eg, Zollinger-Ellison).
  • Precipitants:
    • supine
    • fatty foods
    • caffeine
    • alcohol
    • cigarettes
    • CCB
    • pregnancy
    • obesity
