Overview of side effects of chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer
Taxanes
- grade 2 to 4 neuropathy occurs in 15 to 20 percent, and grade 3 or 4 neuropathy in approximately 5 percent
- Symptoms usually improve slowly after discontinuation of treatment (over weeks to months);
- pneumonitis in approximately 5 percent
- Hepatotoxicity: one-third of patients
- Dose-related myalgias and arthralgia
Anthracyclines
- cardiotoxicity
- Malaise
- Alopecia
- Amenorrhea
- Hematologic & oncologic: Leukopenia (≤75%; nadir: 10 to 14 days; recovery: by day 21), neutropenia (≤75%; nadir: 10 to 14 days; recovery: by day 21), anemia, thrombocytopenia
Cyclophosphamide
- the most common toxicities are nausea, cytopenia, ovarian insufficiency, and fatigue. Late toxicities can include a small risk of secondary hematologic malignancies.
