Hormone Therapy

•   Definition: Medications that suppress endogenous hormones that drive growth of certain tumor types (e.g., breast, prostate cancer)

•   Examples:

-   Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen used to treat hormone-receptor positive breast cancer

-   Aromatase inhibitors (AIs): Anastrozole, letrozole, exemestane. Used to treat hormone-receptor positive breast cancer

-   GnRH agonists: Leuprolide. Used for testosterone suppression in prostate cancer and ovarian suppression in breast cancer

-   GnRH antagonists: Degarelix

-   Selective androgen receptor antagonists: Flutamide, bicalutamide, enzalutamide, apalutamide

-   CYP17 inhibitors: Abiraterone blocks synthesis of androgens
