Cell count of ascites
normal limit of PMNs in ascitic fluid up to 250 PMNs/mm3. Bloody tap (typically from traumatic para) can skew cell count; subtract 1 PMN for every 250 RBCs to correct PMN count. Ascitic PMNs ≥250 suggest infection.
