- When evaluating a patient for gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB),
- it is important to consider the patient’s past history of GIB,
- the speed at which the current bleed is occurring,
- specific symptoms related to the bleed (such as hematemesis or melena)
- other gastrointestinal symptoms (such as abdominal pain,
- changes in bowel habits,
- weight loss,
- or nausea and vomiting)
- use of medications such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or alcohol,
- use of anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications,
- a history or risk factors for cirrhosis,
- radiation therapy,
- or prior gastrointestinal or aortic surgery.
